A magnum holds 1.5 liters of wine or champagne, twice a standard 750ml bottle. Champagne houses have used the format since the 1700s, originally just to make an impression at the table, and later because they noticed the wine actually held up better inside it.

Why go with a magnum

• More pours per bottle. A magnum gets you around 10 to 12 glasses of champagne, close to double a standard 750ml, so one bottle can carry a toast without a second one waiting in the wings.
• Ages differently, often better. There's less air relative to the volume of wine inside, so it develops more slowly. It's part of why Dom Pérignon and Veuve Clicquot treat their magnum releases as their own thing, not just a bigger pour of the same wine.
• Sometimes the only way to get a specific vintage. A handful of prestige cuvées are bottled in magnum in limited numbers and never released as a standard 750ml at all.
• Looks like an occasion. At a wedding or a corporate toast, one magnum on the table reads differently than two regular bottles standing next to each other.

  A magnum holds 1.5 liters, the same as two standard bottles. In champagne, a double magnum and a jeroboam are actually the same bottle: both hold 3 liters, it's just two different names for the same size. Still wine is less consistent. A jeroboam can mean 3 liters in Burgundy or 5 liters in Bordeaux, so it's worth checking the specific bottle if exact size matters for your event.

• Can you ship magnum bottles as a gift?

  Yes, across the U.S. wherever state law allows alcohol shipping. We check ID at the door, so make sure someone 21 or older will be around to receive it.

• Is a magnum worth the extra cost over two regular bottles?

  Depends what it's for. If it's just for drinking, two regular bottles get you the same volume for less. If it's a gift or a table centerpiece, the format does something a regular bottle can't, and since a number of houses only bottle their top vintages in magnum, you're sometimes getting something you can't buy any other way.
