In 1996, he and his wife Beatrice searched the world for a place that would give him complete winemaking freedom—from Argentina to Lebanon to South Africa, before settling on Paso Robles, California, whose calcareous limestone hillsides offered the ideal terroir. They purchased the land and founded L'Aventure in 1998; the name says it all, French for "the adventure." Today, flagship wines like Optimus and Côte à Côte blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, and Mourvèdre into combinations that couldn't legally exist back home—wines that regularly earn top ratings and stand as iconic benchmarks in Paso Robles winemaking.
